The rash of arsons in the town this year have resulted in an increase in the Melrose Fire District budget.
With a 300 percent increase in the number of fires, the 30-member department has spent about $3,000 more in diesel fuel used to respond to the fires, which were usually set late at night or early in the morning in vacant buildings in or around Schaghticoke, said Melrose Fire Chief Dominick Pasinella.
